Executive producer Alex Gibney and directors Matthew Heineman and Matthew Hamachek tackle the life and legacy of Tiger Woods in a four-hour HBO documentary.
Tiger, HBO s two-part documentary focusing on the rise and fall and rise of Tiger Woods, begins with the golfer s father, Earl, speaking at the 1996 Haskins Collegiate Award Banquet. With his son sitting near him on the dais looking vaguely embarrassed, Earl breaks into one of the bouts of hyperbole that made him such a beloved interview subject during Tiger s peak. He ll transcend this game and bring to the world a humanitarianism that has never been known before. The world would be a better place to live in by virtue of his existence and his presence, Earl declares.

NEW YORK For a man who first appeared on television when he was 2, showing Bob Hope how he could already swat golf balls, the public actually knows little about Tiger Woods.
Getting behind carefully-constructed walls was the challenge faced by filmmakers Matthew Hamachek and Matthew Heineman, whose two-part HBO documentary “Tiger” starts Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern. Even without their subject’s co-operation, the men created a fascinating portrait of a champion driven relentlessly to success.
“Both of us had read that and sort of thought that, well this would be a fascinating way to start the film because I think introducing our film through Earl’s words was always going to be fascinating,” Hamachek said. “The problem was that, while Gary had written about it and several people had sort of taken what Gary said and wrote it and used it and regurgitated it, nobody had ever seen the actual footage or heard Earl’s words before. This was really just sort of cocktail napkin scribblings of a journalist who was there.”
A month into making their movie, the Matts reached out to the Haskins organization.
