Award-winning author Michael Sadowski (Communication ’83) explores sexuality and gender identity in his recent memoir, “Men I’ve Never Been.”
As part of Bookends & Beginnings’ virtual “Literary Lunchbreak” series, Sadowski discussed his latest book Thursday afternoon with LGBTQ+ activist Jim Obergefell. Obergefell is the named plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges (2015), which legalized same-sex marriage in the United States.
During the event, Sadowski, an administrator and professor at Bard College, read several excerpts from his memoir, including the prologue.
“The sections to the book are divided under three titles that are called ‘Noise,’ ‘Silence’ and ‘Voices,’” Sadowski said. “I call the prologue ‘Before,’ because it’s before all the noise and the silence and the voices.”

Just nine days after Mike Polisky was promoted as Northwestern s new athletic director, Polisky resigned from his post following significant criticism and a community-wide protest organized by faculty members. My love and respect for Northwestern and for our student-athletes, coaches and staff, is greater than my own desire to lead the department, Polisky said in a statement. I do not want to be a distraction to our incredible men and women as they pursue a collective goal – to help our student-athletes become the best they can be. While my family and I are disappointed, I move forward knowing this is the right decision.
Nine days after his official announcement as Northwestern’s next athletic director, Mike Polisky resigned from the position Wednesday night and will be departing the University. “Over the last 10 days, it has become clear to me that the current challenges will not allow me to effectively lead our department, especially during these unsettling times in.
Three weeks ago, my fellow Coptic-Egyptian friend, Weinberg freshman George Mousa, and I administered an anonymous survey to the Northwestern community via social media about Middle Eastern and North African students at the University to gather statistics before creating a petition to send to Multicultural Student Affairs. The petition urges for the creation of an MSA branch with its own content expert and graduate student expert dedicated to MENA students at the University.
The first question on the survey was “Do you know of any Middle Eastern or North African students at Northwestern?” Out of 67 respondents, 80 percent answered “Yes.”When asked, “In your opinion, are Middle Eastern and North African students a minority at Northwestern?” 81 percent of respondents answered “Yes.”
A black editor at the
Daily Northwestern student newspaper has developed a brand new way of determining whether you’re a racist or not.
It’s the way you walk, whitey.
That’s right. The editor, Kenny Allen, “wondered why walking around on campus could be so frustrating.” Apparently, Mr. Allen “would often have to walk way around people to pass without bumping into them.”
Isn’t this kind of like “manspreading”? Sort of. But it’s so much more. Males who open their legs wide on subways are just asserting their dominance over women, say feminists. But sidewalk hogs are apparently all white and do it just to annoy black people. Like “Jim Crow” on steroids.
