ROCKPORT Following the early morning, May 20 announcement that Jon Duke has been hired as the town’s new town manager, effective July 6, his father, Robert Duke, is withdrawing from the Select Board ballot and municipal committees. The ballot, however, has been printed; therefore, voters are being informed now that Duke will not serve on the Select Board if he wins a seat.
He sent the following letter to the town:

Gardiner’s Bay Country Club (GBCC) seeks to construct for its seasonal workers: a 40-bed staff building and a second structure with four one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments, accommodating up to 64 people (see story, page 11). Given the AA Residential zoning, the Town Board would have to issue a special permit.
At the ZBA hearing on May 26 at 7:30 p.m., residents should urge that: (1) an independent consultant study any environmental risks involved; and (2) if the expansion is found not to impose undue risks, the Board condition any approvals on GBCC, such as: (a) setting aside some apartments at rates affordable for year-round Island workers, including town employees and EMS and Shelter Island Fire Department volunteers; and (b) following more environmentally friendly practices.
Following the May 11 meeting of the Killeen City Council, the tides will begin to change in council chambers. Two new members will be sworn in, bringing new voices to District 1 and District 3.
District 4 could see a new member as well, but a razor-thin Election Night lead and issues with voters casting ballots in the wrong district mean that chair could stay vacant until the issue is resolved.
After a solid victory, incumbent Debbie Nash-King will retake her District 2 seat, serving her third term. It is the final consecutive term allowed under city law, and her seniority could give her a leg up in the election of mayor pro tem.
