NEW ULM The New Ulm Planning Commission selected Upper Cottonwood, Pollinator Park, Maplewood and Lakeside Village as the top locations to develop neighborhood parks.
Over the last few months, New Ulm has been reviewing existing and proposed parks for development. The Park and Recreation Commission took the lead on creating a ranking system to identify the most appropriate location for the next park.
The Planning Commission has also participated in the review process. Last month, the Planning Commission members each identified their top three choices for the next park. Upper Cottonwood, Laekside Village and Maplewood were ranked the highest by the Planning Commissioners, but they deferred any further action until more information was available on the Parks Commission’s evaluation process.

Interested residents have until Friday to apply for a vacant seat on the Livingston County Planning Commission.
The Livingston County Board of Commissioners is looking to fill a vacancy for a member representing residential on the Livingston County Planning Commission. The Commission meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm.
The posting for the position states that Planning Commissioners are expected to attend monthly meetings to review and make recommendations on rezoning cases, zoning ordinance and master plan amendments as submitted by the sixteen townships in the county.
Commission members receive mileage reimbursement and per diem compensation for each meeting they attend. Those interested in applying are asked to submit a resume and letter of interest by Friday. Details are available through the provided link.

Houghton City Council approved resolution 2020-314, which pertains to rezoning a parcel representing a majority of the former Michigan Smelter site, but rejected 2020-315, a smaller lot where the seaplane hoped to relocate its base of operations. The first vote was 4-3, with newer council members Brian Irizarri, Jan Cole, and Joan Suits voting against. The other count was 2-3, with Councilor Mike Needham and Mayor Bob Backon abstaining due to their membership on the Planning Commission.
Public comment was split, perhaps leaning slightly in favor when correspondence was factored in. Kristine Weidner argued that the site’s former superfund status should not be seen as a hindrance to future development. Instead, she felt it would represent an intended progression for the property per the Environmental Protection Agency’s own guidance.

The Park City Planning Commission has not drawn large crowds like those that attended meetings during the talks about the hotly contested Treasure proposal, shown in 2017, but major growth decisions are looming. City Hall is accepting applications from people who want to serve on the Planning Commission.

There are at least two spots available on the Park City Planning Commission that are expected to be filled early in 2021, making it nearly certain there will be turnover on the influential panel amid the continuing talks about a major development proposal at Park City Mountain Resort.
