States, provinces or regions as the case may be, are essential components of federations and must meet certain conditions to make sense. To begin with, Federalism is a mode of political organization that unites separate states or other polities within an overarching political system in a way that allows each to maintain a measure of control over its territory, making it a federating unit. Nigeria is one of the 25 federations in the world but with the queerest composition.
According to UNDP and OECD standards, population, land mass, economic viability and human capacity are the four universal elements that guarantee a nation’s quest at providing good livelihood to her citizens . The Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello says the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria, remains sacrosanct and non-negotiable.
Bello, who stated this at a stakeholder meeting on the Niger State position on 1999 constitution review in Minna said whatever the kind of federalism hoped for, the Nation’s unity cannot be compromised.
Represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Ketso, he argued that,” no matter the nature and type of federalism we want to achieve, we must remember that unity of this country must not be compromised.”
The Governor insisted that in every federal system, restructuring is a continuous process through legislative and other procedures accepted by the citizens.
