Jay Harrington, the town manager of Carbondale, has been selected to take over the position of Routt County manager beginning Sept. 20.
The Routt County Board of Commissioners chose Harrington after a selection process involving multiple Routt County employees and community members.
“After a rigorous process examining several candidates, we concluded that Jay’s experience, honesty, ethics, unique background and cooperative leadership style will enable him to thrive as our County Manager,” Routt County Commissioner Tim Corrigan said in a news release Friday.
“We are excited to have Jay join our team and help guide Routt County’s future. We are also very grateful to (Interim County Manager Mark Collins) for his service these last 16 months during a very difficult time,” Corrigan added.
While fireworks are a traditional part of Fourth of July celebrations, Colorado officials continue to remind people not to use flammable materials of any kind this year, as the entire state is under the most severe form of drought.
“They’re predicting extreme drought conditions throughout the year, and this has been a pattern for quite a while at this point,” Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Chief Chuck Cerasoli said. “Large complex fires are one of our biggest concerns in the area.”
Even though Steamboat firefighters are not currently assisting with the Muddy Slide Fire in South Routt County, Cerasoli said the department is still strapped thin, as it has a small staff and is tasked with both the city’s fire and emergency medical needs.

Colorado’s two independent redistricting commissions are looking for public comment on how people feel the new voting boundaries should be drawn and where the state’s new congressional district should be.
The Routt County Board of Commissioners extended the local disaster declaration due to the COVID-19 pandemic for a 15th time Tuesday. It is now slated to be in place until July 1.
The declaration is an administrative tool that can help the county access funding and other resources to assist in the COVID-19 response. States, counties and cities across the country are using emergency declarations to ensure appropriate resources as available for response and recovery.
Gov. Jared Polis issued a declaration of a disaster for Colorado on March 10, 2020, and former President Donald Trump declared a national emergency March 13, 2020.
