Rob Pelinka has never been one to get complacent, so it comes as no surprise that he is exploring every avenue to improve the Los Angeles Lakers’ roster this summer.
That has led to the Lakers being linked to just about every big-name player available in free agency and the trade market despite the team not having a lot of cap space or assets to work with.
If the Lakers want to pull off a big move then it may have to come via trade, and the only players currently under contract other than LeBron James and Anthony Davis that can be dealt are Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marc Gasol and Montrezl Harrell is he opts into his player option. Free agents like Dennis Schroder and Talen Horton-Tucker can also be dealt as a part of a sign-and-trade although that would take their approval.

The Lakers are reportedly pursuing a Russell Westbrook trade, but should the Clippers look to land him first?
On Wednesday, is was reported by Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers have been in pursuit of a veteran point guard this summer. Spears reported that both Chris Paul and Russell Westbrook were potential candidates the Lakers could pursue.
The Westbrook to the Lakers report received an update on Saturday morning when NBA reporter Austin Krell revealed that the Lakers had developed some traction in their pursuit of Russell Westbrook. The supposed trade would require a combination of Dennis Schroder and Kyle Kuzma for salary purposes, and likely young guard Talen Horton-Tucker as the final piece for Washington.

With the suggestion that Russ may be looking for a way out West and the unconfirmed reports that Brad is considering a trade request, I thought it would be useful to survey the NBA landscape to figure out potential suitors for Russ. Chances are that both players end up leaving before the end of the season; both want to contend, but the Wizards are cash strapped, lacking assets, and limited as far as potential for internal improvement. If either demands a trade the other is likely to leave; a Russ trade is unlikely to bring back enough to continue building around Beal, and Russ is unlikely to stick it out in Washington if Beal is traded for picks and prospects.

The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to pursue creative ways to add a third star player this summer, and point guard is a position they are likely to focus on. As luck would have it, Chris Paul has the ability to become a free agent this summer.
Paul, who is close friends with LeBron James, has a $44.2 million player option on his contract for next season. The Phoenix Suns want to keep him, but Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated reports that the Lakers are expected to pursue CP3. They also have interest in Russell Westbrook.
