Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner said he would support indoor dining at 25% capacity in Bloomington saying he thinks that’s safe.
Region 2, which includes McLean County, could improve back to Tier 2 mitigations as soon as Friday. But that, on its own, would not allow indoor dining to resume.
Renner made that statement regarding his support of indoor dining at 25% capacity this week just before he fined three more businesses for allowing inside dining on Tuesday. Those businesses are the Knights of Columbus, Fiesta Ranchera Mexican Restaurant and Crawford’s Pub at 610 W. Chestnut St.
Bloomington City Council meets remotely Jan. 11, 2021.
The Bloomington City Council on Monday overwhelmingly voted to join the Welcoming Network, a nonprofit group that prides itself on creating inclusive environments for immigrants through community engagement, job training and other initiatives.
The 7-0 vote, in favor of the membership in the Welcoming America Initiative, means Bloomington can actively promote “breaking barriers between the immigrant community and the rest of the population,” said Ward 2 council member Donna Boelen, who drafted the proposal.
Council members Jenn Carrillo, of Ward 6, and Jeff Crabill, of Ward 8, who have opposed joining Welcoming America saying it fails to protect the city’s immigrants from an overbearing federal system, were absent from Monday night’s meeting.

Bloomington Mayor Tari Renner said he thinks the governor should allow a limited amount of indoor dining starting now.
Region 2, which includes McLean County, could improve back to Tier 2 mitigations as soon as Friday. But that, on its own, would not allow indoor dining to resume. Under current rules, indoor dining could only resume in a region if its testing positivity rate dips below 6.5% and there s healthy hospital bed and ICU capacity, NPR Illinois reported.
Still, some restaurants are ready to go. Rob Dob s in Bloomington, for example, announced on Facebook it will be reopening dine-in service on Friday.
