Making money as a child in the 1950s in Houghton | News, Sports, Jobs

For the Gazette Growing up in the 50s, there were always a lot of ways for a kid to make money. Seasonal gigs like snow shoveling, mowing lawns, gardening, window washing and even thimbleberry picking provided more than just pocket change. My early clients included, Mrs. Frimodig, Ms. Irene Prisk, Mr. Carlos Haug and Ms. Linda Nikula. My other occasional jobs included delivering the “Grit” newspaper, for which E.B Pancratz had the franchise, and also delivering catalogs for the Fuller Brush Company’s Mr. Moll. I would later graduate to my regular paperboy routes for the Daily Mining Gazette and the Sunday Milwaukee Journal. I also did window washing for several downtown stores, which helped me grow a sizeable savings account at the Houghton National Bank- with the guidance of friendly banker, Dick Rowe, to keep myself equipped with the latest sports gear and other popular goodies.

Copper Country ISD growth | News, Sports, Jobs - The Mining Gazette

George Stockero Over the last seven years, the Copper Country ISD has grown by leaps and bounds, providing more and more services to our schools and students and providing more jobs for our community. Seven years ago, the CCISD employed 87 people. Today, that number has grown 151 employees. So where is the growth? Many people now know about the Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs. After the CTE millage was passed, the CCISD added many new programs throughout the three county region. Student enrollment has nearly tripled and thus the CCISD added 15 new instructors and aides to run these programs. Our REMC department, which handles internet, filtering, computers, security cameras and alarms, has also grown dramatically, by 13 employees. REMC’s SupportNet has grown from supporting 17 agencies to the current 35 agencies and from 4,500 to 13,000 computers.

CCISD CTE student wins gold at State SkillsUSA competition | News, Sports, Jobs

Houghton Daily Mining Gazette HANCOCK All programs offered at the Copper Country ISD Career & Technical Education (CTE) strive, as they put it, to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow, today. This goal is accomplished by delivering instruction by industry experts, utilizing industry level equipment, and promoting a positive atmosphere for students to learn and grow in. As their tagline says, “CTE It’s Working!” Evidence of that success came recently as CTE Automotive Technology student Zander Worm, a senior and 2021 co-valedictorian at Calumet High School, won the gold medal for the state of Michigan SkillsUSA Overall Automobile competition. As CCISD superintendent puts it, “this is a huge accomplishment for Zander and the CTE program as a whole.”
