KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. A Klamath Falls Police detective has been arrested on accusations he caused a multi-vehicle crash on duty while under the influence of fentanyl taken from evidence in a police case.
Thomas Reif, 27, was booked in the Klamath County Jail Tuesday on charges including controlled substance, impaired driving and official misconduct, according to a release from Oregon State Police, the agency handling the criminal investigation.
Witnesses told police they saw Reif driving erratically on Nov. 27 before the crash in Klamath Falls, and paramedics found Reif not conscious and not breathing at the scene. Reif was taken to a local hospital and stabilized. No other injuries were reported.
The following is the department’s statement, sent on the morning of Tuesday, December 15:
On Friday, November 27, 2020 at 3:58pm, Detective Thomas Reif with the Klamath Falls Police Department was on-duty and involved in a vehicle collision at S. 6
th Street and Crater Lake Parkway. At the time of the collision, Det. Reif was operating an unmarked detective vehicle. Medics arriving on scene found Det. Reif unresponsive and not breathing. Det. Reif was rushed to the Sky Lakes Medical Center for treatment. We are thankful that no other injuries were reported at the collision. The Klamath Falls Police Department requested Oregon State Police conduct an investigation into the collision.
Klamath Falls cop arrested after drug-related car crash

State police are investigating a Klamath Falls police detective after he crashed his department car while on duty during a Thanksgiving weekend shift.
State troopers were called to investigate a crash just southeast of Klamath Falls around 4 p.m. Nov. 27.
Officers arrived to find Thomas Reif, 27, unconscious and not breathing. Reif was taken to a nearby hospital, where medics stabilized him.
Troopers said based on evidence collected at the scene, they believe Reif had been using drugs he took from police evidence. He was driving his assigned vehicle when he crashed, according to state police.
