Mesa County warns of hospital strain amid rising COVID cases

Local health officials are warning that an increase in COVID-19 cases has also led to an increase in hospitalizations just as the outdoor recreation season arrives. That s important, hospital officials say, because now is the time that there s usually an uptick in recreation related injuries. “This is the season with increased outdoor activity, traditionally our hospitals fill up this time of year due to injuries and trauma related to those activities,” Community Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Thomas Tobin said in a news release from Mesa County Public Health on Friday. In the last month, Mesa County has gone from three Intensive Care Unit COVID-19 patients to eight. The total number hospitalized is now 25, according to the release.

3 Catholic parishes in Warwick will merge

The merger will be effective July 1. The Saints Rose and Clement church building will be the primary worship site. The St. Catherine and St. Francis of Assisi church buildings will remain available for occasional use, as pastoral needs demand, according to the diocese. Father Andrew Messina, pastor of Saints Rose and Clement Parish, said, “We extend a very warm welcome to all who wish to join us. Working together, with the grace of Almighty God and the assistance of our Blessed Mother, good things will result.”  Father Pierre Plante, pastor of St. Catherine and St. Francis of Assisi parishes, will retire June 30.

(AP) Three Catholic parishes in Warwick will merge as the priest that has led two of the parishes retires. St. Catherine and St. Francis of Assisi parishes will join Saints Rose and Clement Parish, the Diocese of Providence announced Monday, citing a decline in attendance of parishioners and the lack of available priests for parish assignments. Bishop Thomas Tobin approved the merger after “thorough consultations with the affected parishes and with the diocesan College of Consultors and the Council of Priests,” the diocese said. Starting July 1, worshippers will join one parish and the Saints Rose and Clement church building will be used as the main site for the parish.
