Westport High School parents raising money to host own prom amid COVID

WESTPORT Mindi Bennivedse has one daughter and felt both of them have missed out over the last 15 months. Bennivedse says she did not get to send her only daughter, Faith, off to the junior prom or watch her get inducted into the National Honor Society. Bennivedse isn’t the only parent that feels that way. She and Chari Swist Hurley are raising money and have booked June 16 at the Pearl in Taunton for a parent-run Westport High School senior prom. Bennivedse and Hurley began planning earlier this year in case Westport Junior/Senior High decided to cancel this year’s prom, as it did last year.

Proposed food truck at Westport s East Beach raises traffic concerns

WESTPORT When Selectman Brian Valcourt was a teen, he worked on an ice cream truck and truck employees would be “shooed away” by town police if they parked at the town-owned East Beach. Valcourt said not much has changed in the decades that have followed but resident Patricia Garcia is trying to reverse that trend. Garcia and her husband, Michael, are seeking permission to park a food truck and generate business on a town-owned parcel of East Beach. That beach, a rocky one used mostly as a scenic overlook, abuts the trailer lots of seasonal residents. This latter issue is one reason why Garcia’s proposal has been met with some resistance.

Opinion: Brewer, Boxler deserve Westport s support R. Michael Sullivan R. Michael Sullivan lives in Westport and is a former Westport Select Board member and chairman. I hope you will join me in supporting our two incumbent Select Board members at the April 13 Town Election. Dick Brewer and Ann Boxler have well represented Westporters over the past three years but deserve particular praise for guiding the town through this last year made very difficult by the pandemic. They and the rest of the current board have had to make tough choices to accommodate restrictions and budgetary issues brought on by COVID-19, a job I do not envy.
