ALLISON LEVINE
Furmint is more than just one of the primary varieties used in Tokaji Aszú dessert wines. From a dry, crisp wine to a sweet wine, Furmint is Hungaryâs flagship grape.
The first mention of the Furmint grape was in a reference in an ecclesiastical document in 1611. Then in the mid-19th century, Furmint was identified as one of the top three most widespread cultivars of the 63 grape varieties in use at the time. In the 1880s, after phylloxera damaged the vines, the vineyards were replanted with Furmint and it became the truly dominant grape variety.
The heritage of Furmint is replete with myths. Stories claim that it came from abroad, possibly from Italy, brought over by missionaries, colonists, soldiers or kings. Actually, Furmint is the result of a natural genetic cross between Gouais Blanc (an ancient variety) and an unknown, likely extinct, local variety. With a genetic link to Gouais Blanc, Furmint is half-siblings with European grape varieties
Printing Process: Digital printing, foil stamping, embossing Making wine from overripe grapes is a risk that not every winemaker is willing to take. Because this type of grape produces a very modest quantity of finished product, and the danger of losing all the harvest increases with each day passing. Therefore, when Casa Vinicola Luca approached us to design a label for their successful experiment with Late Harvest wine, we knew that the main task in this project was to emphasize the exclusive nature of the product. After all, every drop of this drink is the quintessence of the winemaker s labor and the unique character of the indigenous Viorica variety, from which this wine was created.
Mallicoat: The Idles of March
Don Mallicoat
This is the one month of the year I do not look forward to as a sportsman. I know for a fact that Pope Gregory XIII was not an outdoorsman. No way. If so, when he developed the Gregorian Calendar we use in the western world today he would have taken out the month of March. From a sportsmen’s perspective there is not much of value to the month.
In most states the regular hunting season ends with the last day of February. I guess there is some conservation snow goose hunting to be had, but that usually entails travel and money. Not only that, it doesn’t consume the entire month. That leaves a lot of down time.

N.C. Wildlife Commission Delays Stocking in the Nantahala River
RALEIGH, N.C. – The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has announced it will postpone trout stocking for the Delayed Harvest portion of the Nantahala River from March 5 to March 12.
Agency officials cite Duke Energy’s emergency repairs to the Nantahala Powerhouse as the reason for the schedule change.
The Wildlife Commission’s Regional Fishery Supervisor, Doug Besler, stated, “The powerhouse repairs are resulting in higher than normal flows into the Delayed Harvest portion of the river from Nantahala Reservoir. In order to prevent stocked trout from moving out of the river under these high flow conditions, the Commission has decided to reschedule the stocking until the work is complete and river flows are back at a normal schedule.”
