WASHINGTON - In late January, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., fell ill and was briefly hospitalized. A day later, Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., went into quarantine for a few days after coming in close contact with someone who tested positive for the coronavirus.
Both senators returned to work a few days later, but their brief absence served as a stark reminder of just how perilous the Democratic majority is in a 50-50 Senate, particularly as they plan to push through a $1.9 trillion pandemic rescue package later this week.

Cato the Younger gets the earliest historical credit for a filibuster when he tried to thwart Julius Caesar s plans in ancient Rome, CBS This Morning: Saturday co-host Jeff Glor reports.
The U.S. Senate defines a filibuster as an informal term for any attempt to block or delay Senate action on a bill or other matter by debating it at length, by offering numerous procedural motions, or by any other delaying or obstructive actions. The word itself sprang from the Dutch word vrijbuiter, meaning pirate or plunderer.

President Joe Bidenâs focus Thursday, his first full day in office, was the pandemic. He signed 10 executive orders aimed at expanding access to testing and vaccines, reopening schools, and getting people back to work.Â
A majority of Americans are at least somewhat optimistic that President Biden can restore civility and unity to the nationâs politics, according to a bipartisan Battleground Poll released last week by the Georgetown University Institute of Politics and Public Service.
Why We Wrote This
President Joe Biden emphasized unity at his inaugural address. But as he begins tackling the nationâs many crises, translating that ideal into action may be easier said than done.
