Documentary features Zanesville protest
A May protest in Zanesville following the death of George Floyd last year is the subject of a new documentary.
Zanesville resident and Dennison University journalism professor Doug Swift created the short film “What Matters? Documenting the Fight for Racial Equality in Zanesville” focusing on the peaceful protests that took place in the city on May 30th, 2020.
“There were about 500 people there. About half were black, half were white. Some from the north end, some from the south end. And just the fact that I had never witnessed such an event in Zanesville with such a diverse group of people and especially for such a meaningful cause,” said Swift.

Mason Offers End of Year Positivity
ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Mayor Don Mason of Zanesville realizes the tremendous strain the city of Zanesville has been under during the past year. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to rampant economic uncertainty for many and a sense of despair for all. The mayor says that through it all he’s proud of the local government and community.
“I think I would call this a success because we were able to take key steps forward in the problematic areas. I went door to door campaigning in 2019 for two reasons: one was to get to know people and the second is to listen to people. People all over the city talked to me about the Doug Road, people all over the city talked to me about Lear.”, Mason said of the city’s efforts.

Mayor Mason Looks Forward to 2021
ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Mayor Don Mason of Zanesville is looking forward to implementing more of his plans for the city in 2021.
Many projects were started this year but were unable to be finished due to time and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Some projects were years in the making.
“We acquired, finally in July, I know it feels like forever ago but it was just July, we acquired the title to the Lear property. We’ve used environmental engineers to analyze those piles and again I caution people to stay away from those piles, most of them have debris in them with asbestos. We are working with local firms to cost out how much removal and disposal of the asbestos and other brick and mortar and other debris will be” Mason said.

Mayor Mason Gives His Year In Review
ZANESVILLE, Ohio-Mayor Don Mason was sworn in as mayor of Zanesville at the end of 2019.
The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown a wrench in his plans for 2020. Through the pandemic Mason still feels like his 2020 was a successful year for his plans for the city.
“We started planning how to handle changes in traffic when I-70 is under reconstruction, and we’ve been working with ODOT on that. On that note I don’t know that the public has noticed, I started using city crews and street sweepers to clean I-70 between the on and exit ramps in Zanesville. That being said we started running two pieces of street sweeping equipment this year for eighty hours a week.”, Mason said of the cleanup efforts he has implemented.
