COVINGTON, Ga. Newton County commissioners have approved agreements designed to help finalize a deal for construction of a data center on the last sites available within Stanton Springs industrial park.
Commissioners on Tuesday, March 2, voted for agreements with the data center developer identified as Baymare LLC as well as three neighboring counties and a joint development authority for the project planned for a site in the park near Social Circle.

COVINGTON, Ga. Newton County’s Bicentennial Celebration Committee hosted a showing of the movie, Selma, Saturday, Feb. 27, outdoors at Legion Field in Covington.
The free showing of the movie celebrated Black History Month as well as the county’s bicentennial and its prominent place in the film industry.
“Selma,” released in 2014, was partially shot in Newton County.
County Chairman Marcello Banes welcomed movie-goers to the event, which included the Covington-Newton Chamber of Commerce-produced short film featuring clips of movie and TV productions from the past five decades that used the county as locations.

COVINGTON, Ga. A tentative hearing date has been set for a state appeals court to hear arguments on a judge’s September ruling favoring the county government’s planned removal of a Confederate monument from the Covington Square.

COVINGTON, Ga. Commissioners nearly began the process of allowing outdoor shooting ranges in most rural parts of the county but ultimately were unable to approve it after one apparent supporter was confused by what she was voting on.
The Newton Board of Commissioners deadlocked on a 2-2 vote that effectively denied a Lithia Springs-based gun club’s request to amend the county zoning ordinance to allow outdoor gun shooting facilities in areas zoned AR-Agricultural Residential.
