Nova Scotia s opposition members hammered the government Thursday during question period over its handling of a deadly COVID-19 outbreak last year at a Halifax long-term care home.
Premier Iain Rankin repeatedly avoided answering direct questions about the outbreak that sickened 345 residents and staff, including 53 residents who died, during the first wave of the pandemic.
The questions came on the same day The Coast published a comprehensive look at the outbreak, including comments from some people who worked at the site and family members of residents who continue to have concerns about the handling of the situation.

Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin says his government does not plan to have settlement talks with Northern Pulp, despite a warning from the company that it might sue the province if the two sides can t agree on the terms of an environmental assessment for a new effluent treatment facility.
The company said in an affidavit recently filed in a B.C. court that it intends to submit a revised proposal for the new facility next month. It added litigation may be necessary to resolve disputes if common ground can t be found.

The man who authored the report outlining how Nova Scotia can move to a more sustainable approach to forestry is scheduled to release an update on the government s progress in June.
Lands and Forestry Minister Chuck Porter said during budget debate on Tuesday at the legislature that University of King s College president Bill Lahey will provide an update to his department this month and have a finalized review complete for public release about two months later.

When the Nova Scotia legislature is sitting for long hours for successive days, NDP House leader Claudia Chender knows she has a plan she can rely on so her three children have care while she s at work.
But not everyone has the financial means or social network for that. Chender, the MLA for Dartmouth South, said that creates a barrier for many people when it comes to considering a run at public office.
