Please join the CSIS Africa Program for a unique event featuring Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY).
Newly elected as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the first Black Member of Congress to serve as Chair of that committee, Representative Meeks will outline his vision for a reimagined approach to U.S.-Africa policy in a democratically controlled house and senate. Representative Meeks will also engage directly with Ugandan and Ethiopian activists working on the frontlines to advance democracy in their respective countries and in the region. In conversation with Rep. Meeks, panelists Rosebell Kagumire and Tsedale Lemma will discuss Uganda’s controversial elections, the conflict in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, and the impact of the Capitol attack on the U.S. government’s credibility. This dynamic conversation will conclude with key recommendations for the new Biden Administration.
As the 117
th Congress gets to work, major challenges at home and across the globe will require congressional attention. Some of these challenges, such as a hostile Iran, will directly impact the US-Israel relationship. At the same time, Congress will have opportunities to build on recent successes in the Middle East, like the signing of the Abraham Accords. With a razor thin majority, bipartisan support is going to be critical to advance any issue or policy.
The US-Israel relationship, founded on shared values and mutual interests, is an issue that unites the overwhelming majority of Democrats and Republicans. In fact, the 2020 election cycle further proved that support for the US-Israel relationship isn’t just good policy – it’s good politics on both sides of the aisle, as almost all strong supporters of the US-Israel relationship won their competitive reelection races.
August Pfluger
Monday night, Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11) was appointed to serve as a member on both the House Committee on Homeland Security (CHS) and the House Foreign Affairs Committee (HFAC) for the 117th Congress.
“I am honored and excited to represent the 11th District of Texas on two fantastic committees tasked with defending the security of our nation at home and abroad,” said Congressman August Pfluger. “The most important role of the federal government is protecting our citizens from national security threats, and both of these committees will allow our district to have a seat at the table regarding immigration and border security, counterterrorism, cyber security, energy, and international trade. I will also be directly involved in advancing America’s position against global threats like China, Russia, Iran and other rogue actors, and defending American energy on the international stage.
