By Janene Scully, Noozhawk North County Editor | @JaneneScully January 23, 2021 | 7:33 p.m. The Lompoc Unified School District board president’s push to hire an attorney for unspecified legal services prompted strong opposition from administrators about the unusual proposal. Bill Heath The agenda for the LUSD board meeting earlier this month included “approval of agreement to provide specialized legal services” and was proposed by board president Bill Heath. He recommended that the five-member board approve a contract with Santa Barbara-based KVT Law Group LLP to provide temporary specialized legal services at a rate of $300 per hour for attorney time and $125 per hour for paralegal services.

WCCUSD to open K-12 Virtual Academy in 2021-2022 school year

By Kathy Chouteau The West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) is preparing to open a K-12 Virtual Academy during the 2021-2022 school year. It will be the district’s 54 th school. During the Jan. 13 Board of Education Zoom meeting, the district laid out its plans to open a brand-new school in time for the next academic year. At a time when many WCCUSD families are hesitant about someday sending their children back to in-person instruction, the new school will provide a permanent online option. Board members offered their unanimous support of the agenda item, provided some directional input and ultimately gave the green light for the district to move forward on determining the school’s roadmap.

WCCUSD releases survey in response to in-person learning legislation

Photo credit: Kathy Chouteau West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) families are being asked to respond to a survey about a possible return to in-person instruction. The “Thought Exchange” survey aims to “gather families’ feelings around returning to school,” the district said. The survey was released in the wake of recently-proposed legislation, Assembly Bill 10, which would require public schools to reopen as soon as spring if infection rates drop. Under the proposed legislation, districts would be required to reopen once their county has moved from the State’s most restrictive color-coded purple tier.  WCCUSD released its survey on Dec. 16, about a week after AB10 was introduced. Families have until Friday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m. to respond.
