Firefighters responded to a fire at 440 Bigelow Hill Road in Skowhegan where a shed had caught fire and was destroyed while a nearby garage was saved.

SKOWHEGAN A fire deemed accidental destroyed an outbuilding at a home on Bigelow Hill Road Tuesday afternoon, but firefighters were able to save a nearby garage.
“I can’t rule out an electrical cause,” Skowhegan fire Chief Shawn Howard said at the scene.

Skowhegan is one of many fire departments branching out to other communities to help with emergency services as the availability and amount of help becomes less.

SKOWHEGAN Skowhegan and Oakland fire departments have signed a mutual aid agreement as departments statewide branch out for additional resources due to a lack of manpower.
The agreement was discussed at Tuesday’s Board of Selectmen meeting, held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic. Selectman Todd Smith spoke in favor of the agreement, citing prior conversations with Chief Shawn Howard about the town’s department and what the needs are.
