Sweden Set to Cull 1.3 Million Chickens After Avian Flu Outbreak

COVID-19 isn t the only illness causing concern around the globe right now: Bird flu has swept through Europe, leaving the poultry industry in disarray. Many countries have been affected by the spread of the avian flu with Sweden as the current epicenter. Sweden’s largest egg producer has been ravaged with cases of both the N5N5 and H5N8 variants of the avian flu, which has lead the producer to plan to cull more than one million chickens. The two variants appeared on a farm in Monsteras on January 18th, resulting in Sweden s poultry industry’s dire decision to stop the spread.

Backyard flock and duck farm hit by H5N8 bird flu

The new, separate outbreaks occurred in ducks and a backyard flock of poultry
A duck farm in Norfolk and a backyard flock in Dorset are two of the latest premises impacted by avian influenza this winter, Defra has confirmed.
Highly-pathogenic bird flu of the H5N8 subtype was found at a commercial duck breeding premises near Attleborough, Breckland, Norfolk on 20 December.
All ducks, around 8,000, will be humanely culled, Defra said in an update on the growing avian influenza situation impacting the UK this winter.
A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone have also been put in place around the farm.
