The sad truth is that Mare Sheehan was never going to make it to the conclusion of the Erin McMenamin case and be lauded as a tireless hero cop. She was never going to get a redemptive arc in which a new solve casts a positive light on her past police work. No one was going to tell her that surely, the detective that busted her hump solving Erin’s murder didn’t bring just as much self-ruinous dedication to the Katie Bailey case too. No matter how amazing a detective Mare is, none of that was in the cards.
HBO
Are we ready to get our teeth into the story? The first two episodes have been filled with cliffhangers and red herrings to arouse our suspicions, but as we get to know the people of Easttown a little better, the search should be starting to narrow. But this is TV!! So don t unfasten your seatbelt just yet as we should still expect to be thrown off the scent a few more times.
This week s episode again opens by returning to the crime which the series has been circling around, showing us Erin McMenamin s autopsy where Mare and Detective Zabel listen to her weight in pounds and length in inches being read out in a monotone delivery that feels especially depressing. The evidence suggests she wasn t sexually assaulted, so what is the killer s motive? This seems to be the question which various characters are pondering as they drive through winding Pennsylvania roads, staring into the distance against a soundtrack of Extremely Tense Strings.
One thing that I really appreciate about
Mare of Easstown is the urgency with which characters share information. In these murder mystery shows, the audience is often aware of crucial details weeks before the characters decide to open up to one another. That can become frustrating the longer it drags on.
Mare is refreshing in that regard, and this third episode, in particular, wastes no time spilling its secrets to anyone in earshot.
Following last weekâs revelation that Frank (David Denman) might be the real father of Erinâs (Cailee Spaeny) baby, Lori (Julianne Nicholson) quickly brings her best friend Mare (Kate Winslet) up to speed. While initially taken aback by the news, Mare, likewise, chooses not to sit on the info and immediately heads over to Frankâs to confront him, interrupting family game night in the process. The quickness at which all of this happened left me a little shocked, as Iâm so used to murder shows playing coy.
