ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In an 84-paged report released Friday, an independent investigator faults Rochester mayor Lovely Warren for the city s months-long failure to tell the public about the death of Daniel Prude while in police custody.
The report also blamed former Police Chief La Ron Singletary for downplaying the matter in internal communications. And it calls out false statements made by both, along with city Corporation Counsel Tim Curtin, before and particularly after the case ultimately became public in September. In the final analysis, the decision not to publicly disclose these facts rested with Mayor Warren, as the elected mayor of the city of Rochester, an executive summary states. But Mayor Warren alone is not responsible for the suppression of the circumstances of the Prude arrest and Mr. Prude’s death.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) An attorney hired to independently investigate the City of Rochester s handling of the Daniel Prude case concluded Friday the city suppressed information from getting to the public and made untrue statements.

This week, a March autopsy report from the Monroe County Medical Examiner s Office was released, which ruled the March 23 death of Daniel Prude at the hands of police officers in Rochester, New York, a homicide, saying he died from complications of asphyxia in the setting of physical restraint. The case is now being investigated by the New York attorney general s office.
Prude, a 41-year-old Black man who had come to Rochester from Chicago to visit his brother, was experiencing a mental health crisis, and was running through the street naked. His family called authorities for help, but what happened instead is that the cops ended up handcuffing him, putting a bag over his head a spit bag intended to protect the officers from COVID-19 and then kneeling on his back. There is video and it is horrific.
