Man charged in homicide near Grand Rapids hospital complex Updated Dec 23, 2020; Posted Dec 23, 2020 Facebook Share GRAND RAPIDS, MI Prosecutors have announced murder charges in the slaying of a man who was gunned down Tuesday, Dec. 22, while walking in the Heritage Hill neighborhood. Kent County prosecutors on Wednesday said they have charged a 24-year-old man with open murder, which encompasses both first- and second-degree murder, felony firearm and felon in possession of a firearm as a fourth-time habitual offender. While officials released the man’s name, MLive/The Grand Rapids Press is not naming him until his upcoming arraignment on those charges.

GR Police Chief Calls Tuesday s Shooting Death An Execution

Grand Rapids police are investigating after a man was shot and killed Tuesday morning  on Prospect Avenue SE just south of Cherry Street SE. According to a GRPD release, the shooting occurred around 11:15a.m. Unique Camreil Evans, 28, was walking down a sidewalk when a subject opened fire with multiple rounds. When officers arrived they attempted CPR and first-aid. Evans was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police Chief Eric Payne said in a statement,  “There is no other way to describe this senseless murder other than to call it an execution. With information obtained at the scene, GRPD were on the lookout for a suspect vehicle. Shortly before 1p.m. police spotted the vehicle on Grand Rapids west side. Officers tried to pull the car over, but the suspects fled, eventually crashing at Hamilton Avenue NW and 11th Street NW.

Police about 90 minutes later arrested possible suspects following a crash on Grand Rapids’ Northwest side. Grand Rapids police said Evans was walking along the sidewalk on Prospect Avenue SE, just south of Cherry Street, at about 11:15 a.m. when he was shot. Someone fired multiple rounds at Evans, police said. He was taken to a local hospital but did not survive. Officers had a description of a vehicle from the shooting and located a matching vehicle on the city’s Northwest Side about 12:50 p.m.

Now, she s the police department s Deputy Chief, the first women to hold the role. Police Chief Eric Payne announced the promotion Thursday morning. Deputy Chief Rogers is replacing David Kiddle who is retiring after 28 years at GRPD. He served as interim Police Chief before Chief Payne was hired. Rogers started with the department in 1996, working as a patrol officer before transferring to the Detective Unit for 16 years. In 2012 she was promoted to Sergeant and supervisor of the Family Services Team. Rogers helped coordinate responses to crimes involving children and sexual assault.
