Service from Empire Access available for both residential and business customers will offer speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, company leaders said in a news release announcing the expansion.
Their top competitor, dominant regional cable operator Spectrum, currently offers three tiers, at 200, 400 and 940 megabits per second.
In terms of download speeds, one gigabit per second would be equivalent to 125 megabytes per second meaning it would take about eight seconds to download a one-gigabyte file, in ideal circumstances.
Empire Access calls fiber a “far more reliable” service than cable. Each customer has a dedicated connection and is not affected by congestion from other users or issues such as weather, the company said.
