Gibraltar records ZERO COVID-19 cases among residents and visitors for first time since July 2020

RESIDENTS of Gibraltar are tentatively celebrating as the government have revealed that for the first time in just under a year there are zero active COVID-19 cases among residents and visitor alike.
The welcome news was announced by the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo yesterday, the day before the Rock opens up a travel corridor with the UK.
For the past six weeks, Gibraltar has had a zero incidence rate among residents, an enviable statistic as the region hopes to return to normal.
Gibraltar free of Covid for first time in 10 months 16th May 2021
There are zero active cases of Covid-19 within Gibraltar’s resident and visitor population, the Gibraltar Government said on Sunday, the first time the Rock has been free of the virus in 10 months.
Although there have been no new resident cases for the last six weeks, Sunday marked the first time with zero active resident and visitor cases in Gibraltar since the July 21, 2020.
But even as it confirmed the positive news, the Gibraltar Government underscored the need for caution against the backdrop of mounting concern about new variants in other parts of the world.
Cuts in ‘abuse and waste’, admission of past wrongful public spending

There are signs that public spending cuts are being made, despite the promise of no austerity. These cuts arrive with the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo’s confession that the Covid-19 pandemic has devastated our economy. Based on his May Day message, one is led to believe that any public spending cuts will be made to stop ‘abuse and waste’, and will not amount to his idea of what austerity is. But is that the case, and is there any difference? The definition of ‘austerity’ shows that there is no difference.
GSD presses for progress on McGrail inquiry

The GSD has called on the Gibraltar Government to push ahead with the public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the early retirement of former Commissioner of Police Ian McGrail, questioning the reasons for the delay.
Opposition Leader Keith Azopardi said the inquiry was in the interests of “transparency, good governance and our democratic checks and balances”, adding the GSD would not stop pressing for it.
Mr McGrail retired from the RGP early in June 2020, stepping down as Commissioner after a 36-year career and half-way through his term in the top post at the Royal Gibraltar Police, raising questions as to the reasons for the sudden decision.
