Voices Lectures welcomes Salbi February 24 2021
An Iraqi-American activist who has dedicated her life to helping women in conflict areas will speak March 3.
Zainab Salbi promises to address the theme of How to Heal in a Time of Divide as part of her talk at the next Voices Lectures series event, 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 3.
And she has a lot of experience in dealing with division, as an Iraqi-American humanitarian, author, TV host and activist. She was born and raised in Iraq, and her family had a close association with the late Iraqi president Saddam Hussein her father was his personal pilot. Psychological abuse and more led her family to send Salbi to the United States for an arranged marriage at age 19, and the marriage turned into a nightmare of abuse. She managed to escape it and move on with her life.
Curtis Salgado and his Damage Control life February 23 2021
Longtime blues star navigates pandemic with same vigor as past, welcoming new album but yearning to perform live.
Curtis Salgado s life, along with the lives of about 8 billion other people, changed about this time last year. And, in his now 67-year-old wisdom, he saw it coming. The music industry, in particular, would be on proverbial life support.
Salgado, the longtime Portland bluesman and singer and nine-time winner of Blues Music Awards, played at a full-house gig in Everett, Washington, last February, walked off the stage and heard the news. The coronavirus had reached Washington state. But it didn t stop Salgado, who, along with guitarist Alan Hager, kept a commitment to do a show in Saipan, Japan, in March 2020.

Summer fun
Fun could be headed back to Portland parks this summer.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and government restrictions, the Portland Parks & Recreation s summer parks programs were canceled in 2020. But, Commissioner Carmen Rubio and the City Council have been working on restoring funding for many things, including the summer programs.
If COVID-19 and government restrictions allow, we could see the return of:
• Free Lunch & Play: Serving more than 100,000 meals to alleviate hunger.
• Summer camps: Outdoor day camps, sports and art camps would be available at 20 locations.
Shakespeare Fest plans digital and onstage performances February 22 2021
It s an ambitious schedule for the famous Ashland theater company; could we see in-person shows in fall?
In normal times, Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland draws visitors from around the country.
It s not normal times, of course, but OSF has found a formula to schedule performances virtually and live for 2021, and will continue presenting archived shows on demand.
Because we re still in the COVID-19 pandemic Jackson County is still in extreme risk designation and because it remains uncertain what the future holds, OSF has scheduled original works on digital platform O!, as well as four onstage productions in fall 2021 and early 2022 along with outdoor community performances.
