Township A Battle Zone As Myanmar Junta Enforces Martial Law
03/17/21 AT 11:20 AM
Plumes of smoke rose Wednesday above a part of Myanmar s biggest city which has turned into a battle zone under martial law, with burning barricades and security forces firing at unarmed anti-coup protesters.
Traumatised residents have fled Hlaing Tharyar, an industrial neighbourhood in Yangon that has become a flashpoint in a nationwide uprising against the military s coup nearly seven weeks ago.
The junta has increasingly deployed heavy force to quell the demonstrations, with more than 200 protesters reported to have been killed across the country. Parts of Yangon, Myanmar s biggest city, have turned into a battle zone Photo: AFP / STR

Myanmar: Martial Law Declared In Yangon s Industrial Areas
Chinese Embassy urges junta to punish perpetrators after garment factories allegedly set on fire by protesters. Myanmar s coup-installed regime has imposed martial law in two more densely populated Yangon townships on Monday, a day after security forces gunned down nearly 40 protesters demanding the restoration of civilian rule.
The National Administrative Council, led by the military chief and Feb.1 coup leader Sen. Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, has been escalating the violence to quell the anti-coup demonstration.
It imposed martial law in Hlaing Thar Yar and Shwe Pyi Thar, two industrial cities in the former capital Yangon, on Sunday, following the violence in which almost 40 people were killed and several others injured. Sunday s violence has brought the total death tolls to more than 110 since the Feb. 1 military coup.
