WASHINGTON: DARPA’s new project to research and develop novel materials and processes for manufacturing in space in particular on the Moon is stirring a legal and political dust storm about what DoD can and cannot do in cislunar space under the Outer Space Treaty.
“From an international perspective, DARPA doing anything on the Moon looks bad. It raises suspicions about the intentions of the U.S. space program there, and rightfully so,” Jessica West, senior researcher at Canada’s Project Ploughshares and managing editor of the widely-respected Space Security Index project, said in an email yesterday.
(MENAFN - Asia Times) Aerospace giant Northrop Grumman is wasting no time in this competition.
Just two days after DARPA named it as one of three competitors for the LongShot contract, the company released an image of its concept for an air-launched unmanned aircraft system (UAS), Aviation Week reported .Â
Imagine an unmanned aircraft, speeding ahead of its launch aircraft, that itself can fire multiple air-to-air intercept missiles that can seek out and destroy.
No pilots to risk, just a throw-away UAS, that can potentially avoid enemy radar and return to base unharmed, to be used again.
That s the thing about unmanned systems, they lack the romanticism of the past.

United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is building a submarine that will never run out of power. According to a recent report in Forbes, the defence agency has given contracts to a company named Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation and Martin Defense Group to build a demonstration version of the new unmanned underwater vehicle, named Manta Ray. In order to achieve the indefinite power supply, DARPA has awarded a contract to Metron for the submarine s energy-harvesting system to power it indefinitely, allowing it to carry out missions lasting months or years without having to return to base or refuel.
Developing techniques to protect humans and national security from malicious influence requires public-private collaboration in a neutral environment, a researcher argues.
