Major works on a crucial Central Highlands thoroughfare will begin next week as part of a Department of Transport and Main Roads project.
The DTMR advised construction would commence in late-April on the Leichhardt Highway, south of Banana (between Westwood and Taroom) to replace the Banana Creek Bridge.
The aim of the project is to allow Cockatoo Coal to maintain access to its Baralaba Mine and operations during severe weather events and to increase its annual coal production.
The work will take place from April 19 to late-December, Monday to Saturday between 6am and 6pm.
Lane closures, speed restrictions and traffic control will be in place during active hours.

A woman busted doing 40km/hr over the speed limit with a blood alcohol-content reading of .137 was chastised by a magistrate for thinking it was âpure stupidityâ.
Magistrate Jason Schubert said Susan Anne Actonâs actions on January 23, 2021, where she was detected doing 139kms/hour on the Leichhardt Highway at Taroom at 3.20pm, with a BAC of .137, was ânot stupidityâ as âstupidity is thinking about getting in a carâ.
He said Acton behaved irresponsibly, and unsafely, nearly three times the legal limit for driving with alcohol in the system.
Mr Schubert also pointed to Actonâs traffic record which included doing more than 40km/hr over the speed limit in 2018, along with prior convictions for high range drink driving and disqualified driving.

A rural aerodrome is set for an upgrade of large proportions following a Banana Shire Council decision at a general meeting last month.
BSC resolved in favour of receiving and noting funding application details for the Taroom Aerodrome upgrades project.
The project, to be funded by the Building Better Regions Fund, includes existing runway pavement strengthening, widening and lengthening.
The runway is also set to be bitumen sealed, with the taxiway pavement strengthened.
The apron of the aerodrome will be extended, line marking will be carried out and additional fencing will be erected.

Rockhampton’s Capricornia Yearling Sale Racing Carnival gets off to a dream start at Callaghan Park racecourse on Friday with a massively expanded nine race TAB program.
By sheer weight of horse-starting declarations when 122 were penned-in for the original eight race card, officials had no choice but to willingly expand the program to that of nine races.
This came into fruition when 22 horses from as far afield as Warwick, Taroom, Brisbane, Springsure, Bundaberg and Wondai accepted to race in the $18K 0-58 Ratings Band Handicap (1200m).
