Ladies and gentlemen, the Vice-President and I are very pleased to welcome you to our press conference. We will now report on the outcome of the meeting of the Governing Council, which was also attended by the Commission Executive Vice-President, Mr Dombrovskis.
After the contraction in the first quarter of the year, the euro area economy is gradually reopening as the pandemic situation improves and vaccination campaigns make significant progress. The latest data signal a bounce-back in services activity and ongoing dynamism in manufacturing production. We expect economic activity to accelerate in the second half of this year as further containment measures are lifted. A pick-up in consumer spending, strong global demand and accommodative fiscal and monetary policies will lend crucial support to the recovery. Facebook is no stranger to regulatory investigations, especially in regards to how it deals with competition. Now, the company is facing a new antitrust probe both in the UK and European Union over its practices in the online classified ads market.
The UK s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced today that it is investigating how Facebook uses data it collects from classified ads providers that advertise on Facebook Marketplace as well as information gathered from its single sign-on service called Facebook Login. The CMA is collaborating with the European Commission to launch an in-depth investigation.
The UK and EU have launched antitrust probes into Facebook and how it may have used gathered user data to gain an unfair advantage in the online ads and dating business. Facebook Marketplace and Facebook Dating are the focus.
The US government announced Wednesday (2 June) it is suspending for six months punitive tariffs on Britain, India and four European nations while it works to resolve a dispute over digital services taxes.
