The council on Tuesday voted to solicit interest in filling the seat left vacant on the nine-person council by the resignation of President Paul Hopkins last week. Hopkins stepped down because he is moving out of the area. The last two vacancies had been filled by the 10th candidate on the ballot, a move that Councilor Wayne Wilkinson advocated for. I m a firm believer that person that is on City Council should have been voted by the people, he said. I know in the past that we ve asked letters of interest, and that the council then gets together and goes over those letters of interest. The bottom line is, some of those people nobody ever voted for.
Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre said the owners of the 65-year-old scrap yard may be held liable even though the fire has been ruled an industrial accident. We are working with the DEP, the health inspector and myself as well as the owners of Apkin, we will be having multiple meetings with them to discuss how we can prevent this from happening in the future, Lefebvre said. They can be held liable. . Obviously, there s a lot of departments that were taken out of service to come down here and we have a lot of equipment. So far, minimal equipment lost but there will be there s money involved in all of this. So we will attempt to recuperate what we ve been through.
The annual town meeting will be held Wednesday, May 26, at 6:30 p.m. outside at the Community Center. The annual town election will also be held at the Community Center on Tuesday, May 25, from noon to 7 p.m. All candidates on the ballot are running unopposed. The proposed fiscal 2022 total budget is up 5.53 percent, or $252,310, over this year. The main drivers are the implementation of a preschool program, cost of living and contracted wage increases, and insurance. The town budget is $1,760,373, up $73,476 or 4.36 percent over this year. The final tally was amended at the Select Board meeting two weeks ago to include a 15-hour custodian position at $14.20 an hour.

It was a bleating sound that attracted Savoy firefighter Frank Levesque s attention on Monday as the crew he was with worked to contain the state s largest wildland fire in two decades. The sounds were coming from a fawn in distress and the firefighters were able to quickly get the baby into the hands of a wildlife rehabilitator. We were just taking a break around noontime, and we were waiting for some of the four-wheelers, to bring water and food up and we like started hearing this noise out, out in the woods, Levesque said on Tuesday, adding that he and his wife keep some farm animals and it sounded like a goat. And then I realized it was a baby deer bleating.
