ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The red tide crisis is ruining a lot of people s plans for a day at the beach in Pinellas County but thanks to researchers at the University of South Florida, there s a way to look at the forecast of red tide for the next few days.
Researchers at USF are taking data of how much red tide there is and measuring ocean currents to figure out where the blooms are going and when.
The map may look like a toddler had some fun with a crayon, but the squiggly lines show crucial information about Karenia brevis or red tide and where it s flowing in the bay and the gulf.

FWC, DEP set up office in St. Petersburg to monitor red tide

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Department of Environmental Protection are working to provide real-time updates on the status of red tide around Tampa Bay s waterways. We have people up in the air right now, we have people on boats right now collecting samples, said Eric Sutton.
They re giving predictions of where the red tide bloom might appear and helping residents and business owners prepare for impacts. This week, we are seeing some signs of it dissipating in the bay. We are not out of the woods. I want to make that clear, but we are seeing blooms off of the coast, said Eric Sutton, the executive director of FWC.
