Chennai, May 19 : The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday started selling Remdesivir, the anti viral drug useful in treating Covid-19 patiemts, directly to private hospitals. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin distributed the first batch containing 960 vials to 25 hospitals at a sale counter which was set up at Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
The development came after private hospitals asked the relatives of the patients to get the drug directly. The drug was priced in the black market at Rs 40,000 per vial and this led to a rethinking among the policy makers in the government, after which the government decided to directly supply the medicine to the private hospitals.

CHENNAI: In the wake of second wave of Covid-19, the State government, on Sunday, constituted a consultative panel comprising 13 legislators from various political parties. The all-party panel, which also includes former health minister C Vijayabaskar, will meet at regular intervals to suggest measures to be taken to control the coronavirus spread. The public department secretary will act as member secretary for the all-party committee said the statement.
Installed at a cost of ₹30 lakh, the six kilolitre storage tank will store liquid oxygen, which can be vaporized and used to treat patients requiring oxygen support, an official said
Anti-viral drug Remdesivir would be made available directly to private hospitals to avoid overcrowding in places designated for its prescription based sale by state authorities to the kin of COVID-19 patients, the Tamil Nadu government said here on Sunday. Effective May 18, a facility would be made available to private hospitals to register their drug requirement in a portal and only their representatives should collect the medicine from sale depots. While information on the portal would soon be released, the hospitals must furnish information related to intended recipients, the oxygen dependent patients, the government said in an official release. The state-run Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation provided the drug to government hospitals.
