Coimbatore: At a time when the number of Covid cases has been rising across the country and the state government has issued fresh travel guidelines for the international and domestic passengers, city residents flouting mask and social distancing norms have become a common sight in the public places.
“Though there is no major rise in Covid cases within the city limits, we need to be cautious and follow all the guidelines to prevent another spike. But people are not taking the precautionary guidelines seriously due to drop in Covid cases,” an official from the health wing of the city corporation said.

‘Public have become careless since Tamil Nadu has a positivity rate of 0.9%’ Complacency in adhering to precautionary norms may lead to a surge in COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu, Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan warned on Monday.
“COVID-19 cases are on the rise in various districts of Maharashtra. On Sunday, it recorded nearly 6,900 new cases. Neighbouring Kerala is also continuously reporting daily cases between the range of 4,000 and 6,000. The positivity rate is high in many States, such as Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The public have become careless because Tamil Nadu has a positivity rate of 0.9%,” he told presspersons.

Palaniswami noted that about 10 lakh cases were registered by the police under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act and Epidemic Diseases Act against the violators since the nationwide lockdown.

TENKASI: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said that the State government had dropped the cases registered against the public for the violation of the lockdown rules announced by the Central following the COVID-19 outbreak.
Addressing the party cadres in the election campaign organised in Kadayanallur here on Friday, Palaniswami noted that about 10 lakh cases were registered by the police under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act and Epidemic Diseases Act against the violators since the Central government declared the nationwide lockdown on March 25, 2020.

The IIT-Madras cluster of COVID-19 infections that was detected in early December created a flutter in Tamil Nadu, which is otherwise seeing a drop in the number of cases. A blitzkrieg operation by the Chennai Corporation, the State Health Department and IIT officials seems to have stemmed the transmission. As other institutes start reopening gradually, the harsh lessons learnt from this experience must not be overlooked.
