A massive cache of tens of thousands of hacked emails detailing the inner workings of Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s administration was leaked to the public last month apparently in response to the fatal police shooting of 13-year-old Adam Toledo.
The emails were posted online on April 19 by Distributed Denial of Secrets, a nonprofit whistleblower group similar to WikiLeaks that’s facilitated other recent high-profile data dumps. An unrelated hacker gang initially stole the files during a series of data breaches that swept up sensitive information from corporations, universities and government bodies. Related
Freddy Martinez, a local activist and member of DDoSecrets’ board, said his team discovered the files on the “dark web,” an unchecked portion of the Internet that’s a haven for cybercriminals. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has lost key players in the police reform arena as she grapples with fallout from multiple CPD controversies, blown consent decree deadlines and simmering debate in the City Council over civilian oversight of the police.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Susan Lee and Chief Risk Officer Tamika Puckett both left in October, followed by Corporation Counsel Mark Flessner in December. Interim officials now fill all three roles. The city s inspector general, Joe Ferguson, is on unsure footing as his term expiration approaches in October. The mayor has hinted he won t be retained.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot is losing yet another key member of her cabinet.
Family & Support Services Commissioner Lisa Morrison Butler announced her resignation Monday in an email to the 50 aldermen with whom she has worked so hard to combat Chicago’s entrenched problem of homelessness.
“It’s a loss to the city. . She was compassionate and fair. Whoever comes behind her has big shoes to fill,” said Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd), chairman of the City Council’s Budget Committee.
“I can speak to her willingness to try new approaches to dealing with the homeless situation I have in a location in my ward. It’s still problematic. But we were able to get two or three people into housing, which removed them from the streets. It’s a challenge, but she was willing to try different ideas and find funding for them.”
