Helpline Center seeks registrations for Spirit of Volunteerism Awards, COVID-19 Edition
The Helpline Center of the Black Hills is asking community members to register volunteers who stepped up during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to help. All volunteers will be recognized in an online presentation.

RAPID CITY, S.D. Each spring, the Helpline Center’s Volunteer Connections Program honors people who go above and beyond the call of duty with the Spirit of Volunteerism Awards; this year it has a tag, COVID-19 Edition.
This year, Helpline is focusing on celebrating COVID-19 volunteers those who stepped up during the pandemic. Anyone can register a volunteer who gave back or is still giving. All volunteers that are registered will be recognized.

Isle Of Wight Volunteer Sailors Scoop Prestigious Accolade For Dedication

Two Isle of Wight sailors, who are volunteers, have been awarded prestigious national RYA (Royal Yachting Association) awards in recognition of their exceptional dedication to boating .
Michael Smith from Sea View Yacht Club and Polly Schafer from Brading Haven Yacht Club - have been awarded the prestigious national accolade.
The sailors are among 44 ‘unsung heroes’ from across the country celebrated in the RYA Volunteer Awards 2020, which are held annually to say ‘thank you’ to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the sport.

TULLYVARRAGA’S Denis Bates, a retired teacher, has received an award for volunteering work with Ireland’s largest aid agency, Concern Worldwide.
Denis received a silver medal for his involvement with its national debating competition, Concern Debates, which he has been involved with since 1985.
Hundreds of schools take part in the nationwide contest each year with students going head-to-head in debates about world and development issues – with volunteer judges like Denis deciding who wins each one.
A Mallow woman who has helped raise over €130,000 for the world s poorest people by organising annual street collections in the town for the last 46 years, has been honoured by the Irish humanitarian organisation Concern Worldwide.
Retired nurse Irene O Brien (70) has not missed a year since she began in 1974, when she returned from working for Concern in Bangladesh and the Blue Nuns in Rhodesia. Kathleen McCarthy had begun the collections the previous year and we are still collecting together, as part of a larger team of volunteers, she said. Even when I was pregnant and had the smallies with me we would run the fast from the caravan outside the church in the town, the mother-of-five recalled.
Clare teacher Denis Bates has been given an award for his volunteering work that dates back to 1984 with Ireland’s largest aid agency Concern Worldwide.
Denis, from Shannon, received a silver medal for his involvement with the charity’s national school debating competition, Concern Debates.
Hundreds of schools take part in the nationwide contest each year with students going head-to-head in debates about world and development issues – with volunteer judges like Denis deciding who wins each one.
Denis was also a mentor for student teams at CBS Sexton Street in Limerick city when he worked there over many years. He also adjudicated at many debating contests involving Clare schools like St. Patrick’s Comprehensive in Shannon and Coláiste Muire in Ennis.
