This was the first flight to Ethiopia from Yemen under the International Organization for Migration (IOM)’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) programme since the COVID-19 global pandemic was declared. “This flight is a vital lifeline for migrants who have been stranded for months on end in unsafe conditions,” said António Vitorino, IOM Director General. “In the coming months, we hope to see more migrants able to safely go home to their loved ones in this way.” Despite a reduction in the number of migrants arriving in Yemen – from 138,000 in 2019 to just over 37,500 in 2020 – the dangers they face have drastically increased over the past year. 03/14/2021 | Press release | Distributed by Public on 03/13/2021 13:43 Statement by IOM Director General António Vitorino on the Deadly Fire at a Migrant Holding Facility in Yemen I am deeply saddened by the deaths of dozens of migrants in a fire at an Immigration Nationality and Passport Agency holding facility in Sana a, Yemen, last Sunday (07/03). Our thoughts are with the families of those who died, and the more than 170 injured survivors. Conditions in the holding facility, which was three times over-capacity, were inhumane and unsafe. IOM does not establish, manage or supervise detention centres in Yemen or anywhere else in the world. Our teams provided migrants essential services like food, health care and water they otherwise would not have received.
