It is a statement of intent that the Royal Balletâs first show back for 2021 is focused on living creators, not classics from the vaults. Weâre starting afresh, and the dancers are full of hunger and finesse, diving into new vocabularies and ways of storytelling.
Christopher Wheeldonâs well-loved Within the Golden Hour is a safe opener, with its twinkling costumes, the minimalist swell of Ezio Bossoâs score and the kind of dance you can melt into â in Francesca Hayward and Valentino Zucchettiâs serenely slow pas de deux you can almost hear your heartbeat decelerating. But the rest of the programme suggests artistic director Kevin OâHare is interested in things beyond pure beauty.

Oculus has a new first-party developer under its wing, as the company has just acquired Downpour Interactive – the studio responsible for popular VR shooter, Onward.
The new acquisition was announced in a blog post, featuring statements from Downpour Interactive. When asked why the studio decided to sell, the company stated: “We’ve seen great success with Onward on the Oculus platform for several years first on Rift and more recently on Quest. Becoming part of the Oculus Studios family will give Downpour Interactive the opportunity to cultivate both the Onward community with the full support of Oculus Studios resources, and, in the future, pursue other projects.”

It’s quite commonplace for companies like Microsoft and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) to acquire smaller studios that’ve got popular IPs and teams to support them. Over the last 18 months, Facebook has been doing the same in the virtual reality (VR) space, the latest being Downpour Interactive, the indie team behind popular military shooter
Onward.
Facebook’s Mike Verdu, VP of VR/AR Content made the announcement this weekend, explaining: “Downpour Interactive leads the VR industry as a best-in-class example of a developer working in tandem with its loyal community to create the best possible social and gaming experience.”
