Menem was a mass of contradictions – part buffoon, part brilliant politician, with a lust for power and an instinctive understanding of how to keep it. Unfettered by ideology, he was brought up a Muslim and claimed to be descended from Mohammed, yet he converted to Roman Catholicism (accounts vary as to when, though he claimed to have been christened as a baby by a family retainer) to promote his political career. He was equally chameleon in his political beliefs.
