Two state lawmakers representing coastal communities of Northeast Florida say they expect the Surfside condo tower collapse will bring proposed changes in regulations but they want to see what an investigation determines caused the building to come down.
“It was devastating, said state Rep. Cord Byrd, R-Neptune Beach. Your home is your sanctuary. That’s where you go to get away from the world, and to be in the middle of night in your bed and all of a sudden it collapses, it’s heartbreaking.

The Jacksonville programs being used to fight against violent crime
As crime numbers rise in some cities, one city seeing a decrease in crime is Jacksonville.
But while the overall crime rate in 2020 was down 9.7% in Jacksonville, there were still 12 more murders and an additional 1,075 aggravated assaults last year than in 2019. That’s a 13% increase in murder and a 25% increase in assaults.
With 14.5 murders per 100,000 population, Duval County retained its dubious distinction as the murder capital of Florida in 2020, with many coming as a result of gun violence.

Pandemonium and protests couldn’t stop Gov.
Ron DeSantis from winning again Thursday in Jacksonville, where the
Board of Education approved changes to civics education standards that are music to conservative ears.
The board voted after members of the public squared off on the rule, with some saying it would whitewash history and others saying it would prevent Marxist theory from being taught in Florida classrooms.
American history is to be defined “largely on universal principles stated in the Declaration of Independence.” Teachers’ apparent efforts “to indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view” will also be banned.
