LocalGov co uk - Your authority on UK local government - Watchdog urges revaluation of councils role

Watchdog urges revaluation of councils role The ‘role and value’ of councils in Wales should be re-evaluated in face of rising demand and financial pressures, according to a new report. While local authorities are ‘not confident that they can continue’ to deliver services in high demand they are ‘neither effectively nor consistently involving’ citizens willing to run services, Audit Wales concluded. There is also a lack of comprehensive data to inform spending reductions, according to the report looking at discretionary services. Despite local government services being ‘essential to keeping people safe and healthy,’ the report warned ‘councils face a real challenge of remaining relevant to all their citizens’.

Welsh Test and Trace programme praised for learning lessons

Audit Wales reports that the Welsh Government’s Test, Trace, Protect programme has developed well and effectively learnt lessons from earlier peaks of COVID-19. Audit Wales recently published an overview of progress on the Welsh Government’s Test, Trace, Protect (TTP) programme. The report covers delivery of the programme up to the end of 2020, a point when COVID-19 cases were surging again, with more recent data up to the end of February 2021. The second part of the report focuses on the challenges ahead as the programme and the pandemic continue. Healthcare is a devolved public service, so the Welsh Government runs a separate programme to NHS Test and Trace (NHST&T) in England, although there are some UK-wide arrangements such as the Lighthouse Laboratories that process tests.
