Titanic survivor s daughter remembered as loving mum

A WOMAN whose mother survived the sinking of the R.M.S. Titantic was laid to rest on Saturday. Mrs. Mary Kate McHugh (née McGovern), 96, was well-known across the whole of the island of Ireland due to her mother, the late Mary McGovern, being a survivor of the infamous doomed ship. Mary Kate spent some time recently in Fermanagh with her daughter, Mary, and son-in law, Francie Rogers, in Tempo. Mary Kate was born on September 12, 1925 in Tullytransa, Corlough, Co. Cavan to Peter and Mary McGovern, and had one brother, Hugh, who predeceased her in 1983. Mary Kate took great pride in her mother’s role in history. Mary Kate’s daughter, Mary, said: “She was very proud of her mother for being a survivor of the Titanic.”

How should Ireland commemorate Covid-19?

Opinion: commemorating Covid-19 will be a complex task given that it will be difficult to commemorate something we might all want to forget Over the coming months, government departments will collaborate with different stakeholders, including the National Archives, Creative Ireland and the Arts Council, to develop a programme of initiatives aimed at capturing the Covid-19 experience in Ireland. However, capturing experience is different to commemorating it. Commemoration is a fundamental process through which we engage with significant moments in history, whether it is to mark a one year anniversary or a bicentenary. It involves both the shared presentation of the past and remembrance of the deceased. Commemoration is more than a ritual of wreath laying and token speeches from politicians. Importantly, practices of commemoration can play a functional role in society coming to terms with a difficult past.

Knock Shrine s online faith discussions for Lent

What nurtures our faith and what challenges it today? Where do we find hope and joy in our lives? How can our faith build mental strength, wellbeing and resilience? How has the Covid pandemic impacted upon our faith? These are just some of the questions that will be explored over the 6 weeks of Lent during a new series of online discussions on the topic of ‘Living Christian Faith’. Faith Renewal at Knock Shrine is all about reaching out to people. This will open a conversation on contemporary issues of faith and church life. Chaired by Father Eamonn Conway DD, Priest in Tuam diocese and Professor of Theology at Mary Immaculate College Limerick, the conversations will explore a different theme each week and guest speakers will discuss some of the important questions we all face in living out our faith.
