The decision to withdraw the team from the World Under 20 Championships was made this week in consultation with parents and guardians of athletes, and comes after a detailed review of many factors identified by Athletics Australia and the Australian Government. Some of these factors include the heightened risk of terrorism throughout Kenya, the impacts of COVID-19 and quarantine rules surrounding under age athletes, as well as insurance implications when travelling to Kenya.

The club and the coach who developed the athletic talents of Tom Walsh and Lauren Bruce are thrilled with their selection in the New Zealand team for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. “I’m quite delighted,” coach Ian Baird said. “I told Tom and Lauren what they could achieve way in the future – and it’s come to pass.” Bruce and Walsh, both members of the South Canterbury Athletics Club which will celebrate its 150th anniversary later in the year, were named in Athletics NZ’s 15-strong squad for the Olympics on Friday.

Manawatū athletes deliver the goods for Easter

Easter Saturday and Sunday saw most of the country’s top 12- and 13-year-old athletes competing on the Manawatū Community Athletic Track, as the city hosted the Athletics New Zealand 12- and13 years Interprovincial Teams Event. They certainly did not disappoint with the stadium listing of the best performances on the track for 12- and 13-year-olds needing to be almost completely rewritten after the completion of the competition with 26 new records being established. All competitors were required to compete in both track and field events, with points being accumulated by their performances. At the end of the two days, Canterbury proved to be the top scoring team with Auckland second and Wellington third.
