COVID numbers remain low - Shelter Island Reporter

COVID numbers remain low (Credit: Tara Smith) The administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine at the Shelter Island Library closed out last Tuesday, with plans to provide the vaccine to those signed up prior to Tuesday afternoon. Numbers of cases and hospitalizations remain low, with Police Chief Jim Read saying that only about 1.5 to 2% of new cases have developed countywide. The Senior Center has resumed bus trips, taking four people at a time to the IGA to do their food shopping; the pharmacy; Post Offices; and banks. Until now, others have shopped for the seniors but for those who are able to go out, it’s an opportunity to get some fresh air and get out of their houses, Mr. Siller said.

Library schedules COVID vaccine event - Shelter Island Reporter

Library schedules COVID vaccine event Not vaccinated yet to help stave off COVID-19? The next on-Island opportunity is Wednesday, May 12 at the Shelter Island Library between noon and 3 p.m., when the Johnson & Johnson “one-shot and you’re done” will be administered. To sign up, call school nurse Mary Kanarvogel at 631-749-0302 ext. 129, or email her at [email protected]. The announcement came from Police Chief Jim Read at Tuesday’s Town Board work session. For those who have been unable to get inoculations during the work day, Stony Brook University is arranging to offer late appointments. For information, access the town website at shelterislandtown.us and hit the tab for COVID-19 to find a complete list of where vaccines are being administered.

Islanders propose views for a future Shelter Island: Multiple suggestions under discussion

• Cultural activities • Revitalization of Route 114 to eliminate what some called “an eyesore” How all that can happen should be led by a professional town manager and/or town planner, others said. Many saw that as necessary to meeting future needs. It wasn’t a swipe at current office holders, but a realization that the Town Board needs to set policy. The government does a good job of handling essential services, but not in handling long-term planning, one resident said. There was also a call for digitizing town records to make them more accessible and convenient. “I want a really mixed town to live in multi generational people sharing ideas and space,” one resident said. It was a concept expressed by people in the discussion groups that afforded everyone a chance to be heard with their individual visions of the town they hope will exist in 2030 and beyond.
