Henry Binder (Courtesy photo) Shelter Island High School graduate Henry Binder has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2020 semester at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. He is a 2020 Island graduate, now pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Arts and Sciences. To make the Dean’s List, students must have earned at least 12 credits for the fall 2020 semester and have no disqualifying grades. For the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, undergraduate students must have at least a 3.7 to be named to the Dean’s List.

William Ellis McManus, D.D.S. William Ellis McManus, D.D.S. He graduated as valedictorian from Shelter Island High School in 1959 and was the first inductee into the Shelter Island Scholar/Athlete Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in basketball and baseball. Bill set his sights on becoming a dentist at a young age. He graduated from Brown University with an A.B. in chemistry in 1963 and went on to pursue a doctor of dental surgery (DDS) degree from the Columbia University School of Dentistry in 1968, receiving the distinguished Ella Marie Ewell Medal for proficiency in dentistry, and the pedodontics and oral surgery awards.

(Credit: Courtesy illustration) SUNY New Paltz has announced that Melissa Frasco, a 2017 graduate of Shelter Island High School, has been named to the Dean’s List for the fall 2020 semester. Melissa Frasco Dean’s List designation is reserved for students who excel academically and earn at least a 3.3 grade-point average in a semester with a full-time course load. Well, done, Melissa. And Congratulations to Evi Kaasik, graduating from the University of Rhode Island with Summa Cum Laude honors. Evi Kaasik Now, with degrees in both German and International Studies and Diplomacy. she plans to continue her education in Europe, where she now resides.

Abigail Kotula (Credit: Courtesy photo) Abigail Kotula, a member of the Shelter Island High School’s Class of 2020, has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s fall 2020 President’s List. Eligibility for the President’s List requires that a student accumulate an academic grade point average (GPA) of 3.7-4.0 and earn 12 credits for the semester. Well done, Ms. Kotula.

(Credit: Ambrose Clancy) Last August a group of Islanders came together to discuss Martin Luther King’s immortal speech. Below is a report on that gathering. On the 57th anniversary of one of the most stirring and influential speeches in history, five Islanders gathered to discuss what the words meant then, and what meaning they have now. Their conversation considered what inspired the historic address, and how it can be applied to individuals and communities in light of a time of mass protests for racial equality.
