University of Minnesota students decry PAC influence in Legislature s election of new regents

University of Minnesota students decry PAC influence in Legislature s election of new regents Campus leaders cite board members donations to PAC as conflict of interest before Monday s selections.  March 12, 2021 6:48pm Text size Copy shortlink: University of Minnesota student leaders criticized members of the school s Board of Regents on Friday for contributing money to a political action committee that has been accused of trying to influence the Legislature s election of new regents, calling the donations a thinly veiled effort by board members to pick their future colleagues. Student leaders addressed the board directly and sent letters to lawmakers denouncing the Maroon and Gold Rising PAC. They asked the regents who contributed to the PAC Ken Powell, Richard Beeson, Janie Mayeron and David McMillan to no longer donate and called for the state Campaign Finance Board to investigate the PAC s actions.

Lawmakers, regents raise concerns about undue influence in University of Minnesota regent elections

Copy shortlink: State lawmakers and members of the University of Minnesota s Board of Regents are raising concerns that the Legislature s process of electing new regents has become too prone to outside influence. A 24-member council charged with recruiting and recommending qualified regent candidates has become too political, says its chairman, with some members working to push the candidates of their choice instead of providing a robust list to the Legislature. Additionally, lawmakers and regents have voiced concern that a political action committee may be trying to influence the elections. The behind-the-scenes maneuverings have sparked fresh scrutiny on the regent selection process, which has often been criticized as favoring the politically connected over the most qualified.

Donations from university regents to lobbying group under increasing scrutiny

Joe Augustine/Jay Kolls Created: January 26, 2021 05:14 PM Several members of the University of Minnesota s Board of Regents are facing growing criticism for donating to a political action committee that s acting as an independent lobbyist for the university. Maroon and Gold Rising is an unaffiliated non-profit group created last year primarily by alumni and former regents who say its mission is to support the university s requests for funding.   But it also operates a political action committee (PAC) that shares the same name, website and some of the same members. The Maroon and Gold Rising PAC has boasted about its ability to influence state lawmakers and raise money through political contributions.
