The Addicted Gardener: Plants, animals added to Red List of endangered species

On Dec. 10, the International Union for Conservation of Nature updated its Red List, an inventory of threatened species maintained by the organization and a critical indicator of the health of the world’s biodiversity.
In this Red List update, 31 species were declared extinct. And, of the now 128,918 species listed, more than 35,700 species are currently threatened with extinction. That’s almost 30% of all plant and animal species evaluated by the group. The species listed include all of the world’s fresh water dolphins, 40% of all amphibians, and almost one-third of all oak trees.

A recent assessment of sharks, rays and chimaeras by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Shark Specialist Group in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) has revealed that of the 170 species found across the oceans of the country, 19 (about 11%) are facing high risk of extinction.

There have been mixed results for the world s animals following this year s update to the IUCN Red List of threatened species.
Ahead of the annual update on bird species the analysis for other taxa was announced. Sadly, some 31 extinctions have been announced and all of the world s freshwater dolphin species are now globally threatened. However, European Bison has moved from Vulnerable to Near Threatened, thanks to years of conservation efforts.
