  WINNIPEG A member of the Canadian Armed Forces, who is from Winnipeg, is missing and believed to have fallen overboard, according to the military. Master Sailor Duane Earle, who is a boatswain, went missing on Dec. 14 while deployed on the Royal Canadian Naval frigate, HMCS Winnipeg. A news release from the Department of National Defence says the details of Earle’s disappearance are still being investigated, but it is believed that he fell overboard early on Dec. 14. At this time, the ship was west of San Francisco while heading back to British Columbia after it was deployed to the Asia-Pacific region.

Canadian Armed Forces Sailor Missing From Ship, Believed to Have Fallen Overboard A sailor from Winnipeg has gone missing from a Canadian navy ship, and it’s believed he has fallen overboard, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) said in a statement.  Master Sailor Duane Earle has been reported missing from Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Winnipeg, and it’s believed he has accidentally fallen overboard very early Monday, the Department of National Defence said. The accident could have taken place when the ship was about 500 nautical miles west of San Francisco, California, en route back to Esquimalt, B.C., after being deployed to the Asia-Pacific region, according to officials.

It was returning to Esquimalt, B.C., after being deployed to the Asia-Pacific region. The military says the ship turned back along its route to search once Earle was identified as missing on Monday. Earle’s family has been notified. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan say their thoughts are with the family. “To master sailor Earle’s family and loved ones, we are keeping you in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” Trudeau said Tuesday during a news conference. “And to everyone aboard HMCS Winnipeg, we are standing with you. I know this has already been a very challenging year for those serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.”
