Alternatives suggested to deal with border traffic nightmare

Premium Content Subscriber only A TWEED councillor has joined the list of people writing to the Queensland Premier to suggest ways of easing the border traffic pain for the twin-town communities. Tweed Shire councillor James Owen wrote to Annastacia Palaszczuk today asking for the border checkpoints at Ducat St in Tweed Heads and Nerang Murwillumbah Rd, Natural Bridge to be re-established. “I have been inundated with complaints from Tweed Shire residents regarding the increasing concerns, issues, and inconveniences they are experiencing when crossing the QLD border to go about their essential daily business,” Mr Owen wrote. “It is causing a wealth of problems, both for businesses and individuals, and is increasing community frustration and anger.”

Girl almost lost her hand in shooting, court told

Premium Content Subscriber only TWO men accused of being involved in a shooting which saw a teenage girl almost lose her left hand, have had their court case adjourned until next year. The case involving Jordan Close and Brody Roberts has been adjourned until February 10, 2021 for charge certification. Mr Close, 22, and Mr Roberts, 24, have been accused of being involved in a shooting which saw an a 19-year old girl almost lose her left hand due to the damage. The Director of Public Prosecutions told the court that discussions were ongoing with Mr Close, 22, and a deal had been offered. Police allege that Mr Close shot the woman in her left hand while they were travelling at Lillian Rock on April 19.

Parts of Tweed Valley could face moderate flooding overnight

THE Bureau of Meteorology has warned moderate flooding could occur in Murwillumbah late this evening. Intense rainfall from thunderstorms have been recorded in the past six hours in the upstream tributaries from Murwillumbah, the bureau said in its latest alert. As a result rapid river level rises have been observed along the Tweed River at Uki and fast flows from Uki are travelling to Murwillumbah. Murwillumbah is expected to exceed the minor flood level early Wednesday evening and possibly reach the moderate flood level at North Murwillumbah overnight Wednesday night. Further rises are possible as further heavy rainfall is forecast.

NSW floods to force evacuation for 1000 properties in state s north

Heavy rainfall is likely across the Mid North Coast. Rainfall rates are expected to ease overnight. However, showers and thunderstorms will persist for the coming days and will continue to bring the risk of flash flooding, the bureau said. Rainfall rates could be locally enhanced with thunderstorms, leading to the possibility of very heavy rainfall and dangerous flash flooding. This risk continues along the coastal fringe of the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast overnight tonight. The bureau s earlier severe thunderstorm warning was cancelled overnight for people in the North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Lower Western and Upper Western forecast districts
